Steffen's Dinners is a personal, non-commercial recipe site. This page explains what information is recorded when you visit. The short version: there are no ads, no analytics or tracking services, and no cookies for ordinary visitors.
Server Log Files
Like most websites, steffensdinners.com runs on a web server that writes a log entry for each request. An entry contains your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page (if your browser sends one), and the browser and operating system identification your browser sends (the "user agent"). These logs are used only to keep the site running and to spot errors and attacks, and they are deleted automatically after about two weeks.
The site software also keeps a short log of errors and unusual events, such as "page not found" or failed log-in attempts, which can include the IP address involved. Only the most recent 1,000 entries are kept; older ones are deleted automatically.
Cookies
The site does not set any cookies when you read recipes, search or browse. A cookie is set only when someone logs in, which only the site's administrator does, and it is used for nothing but keeping that log-in session.
No Advertising, Analytics or Third-Party Services
The site shows no ads and does not use Google Analytics or any other analytics or tracking service. Pages do not load scripts, fonts, images or videos from other websites, so your visit is not shared with anyone else. Some pages link to other sites, for example to books on Amazon. These are plain links, not affiliate links, and nothing is sent to the other site unless you click one. Once you do, that site's own privacy policy applies.
Comments
Many recipes show comments that visitors left over the years. New comments are currently not accepted. With each published comment, the name and, if one was given, the web site address are shown. E-mail addresses that commenters provided have never been published and will never be sold or given to anyone. If you wrote a comment and would like it removed, or your e-mail address deleted, please get in touch (see below).
Hosting, Security and Backups
The site runs on a rented virtual server in the United States, and all connections are encrypted with HTTPS. Once a day the server checks with drupal.org for security updates to the site software; this check sends information about the software versions in use, but nothing about visitors. Nightly backups of the site, which include the comments and the short event log described above, are kept for 14 days.
Sharing of Information
None of the information described here is sold, rented or used for advertising. It is shared with no one, except where required by law.
